NICHA SURSOCK
Egyptian-born Lebanese-Croatian currently residing in Vienna, discovered his artistic talent at an early age and published two plays before he turned 17. He studied film direction in Brussels and started his career as an illustrator for l'Orient - Le Jour, a leading French language daily in Beirut. Upon his return to Egypt in the 1980's, he collaborated with 'Le Progres Egyptien', creating a daily comic strip, Aly Gator, a little crocodile's adventures in Cairo. Besides, Sursock created many of Egypt's legendary and renowned bars and restaurants, including the famous Cairo Jazz Club. Since 2020, Nicha has mainly focused on caricature drawing and has produced three drawing series entitled 'My Cities', 'History of the World' and 'My Portrait by Grand Masters. These drawings provide cultural snapshots in a humorous and affectionate way often in the form of public environments populated by a colourful mix of characters, including himself - some caricatural stereotypes of the respective time and society as well as contrasting odd personalities who stand in opposition to the common values belonging to their culture.
